The Expanding Malawi HIV/AIDS Prevention with Local Organizations Working for an Effective Epidemic

We are up and running! Following the Phalombe District Executive Committee’s approval to expand Malawi EMPOWER Project into the district, we are conducting Gender Based Violence (GBV) training targeting health care workers (clinicians, HIV Diagnostic Assistants, Nurses). Scheduled from 28th-30th November 2022, the training aims at building the capacity of health care workers who interact with Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) at facility and community level in identifying and responding to GBV which affects AGYW; increases their vulnerability to HIV risk, decreases testing uptake and HIV status disclosure, and impacts ART/PREP initiation and adherence. Phalombe becomes the third district of implementation for the project. The other two districts are Zomba and Machinga. EMPOWER is building on its successes registered in Zomba and Machinga to ensure that targeted AGYW have access to high quality SRH/HIV integration services including post GBV clinical and non-clinical services based on the project’s minimum package. Malawi EMPOWER Project
EMPOWER Project joins the world in celebrating #IDG2022 under the theme " Our time is now—our rights, our future”. Malawi EMPOWER Project realizes that access to quality sexual and reproductive health services is a lifeline for many girls. Thus, lack of sexual and reproductive health services can lead to HIV acquisition, teenage pregnancies, increased sexually transmitted infections, early marriages, gender-based violence, and even loss of lives. To protect the lives of girls so they realize their dreams, Malawi EMPOWER Project, with funding from USAID, provides standardized SRH/HIV integration services namely Individual risk assessment and risk reduction counselling; GBV and post violence clinical and non-clinical care and support; condom distribution and skills building; STI screening diagnosis and treatment ; HIV testing including Index testing and HIV self-testing , family planning including emergency contraception and Pre-exposure prophylaxis and Sexual Reproductive Health ( SRH) information to adolescent girls and young women in Machinga and Zomba districts. The project conducts systematic referrals to hybrid facilities for services that cannot be provided in mobile clinical outreach like PrEP initiation ad Post exposure prophylaxis. What are you doing to support the girl child? Happy International Day of the Girl Child! ... See MoreSee Less
